The main criterion for group placement is ability but, we will try to keep similar aged swimmers together as much as possible. We will employ test sets to guage a swimmer’s ability to perform basic training sets of the group that he/she is moving up to. However, this test is only ONE criterion for group moves. The head coach in consultation with the group coaches will consider the swimmer’s stage of development, long-term view and the benefits of the move to the athlete, in making the final decision is about all group moves.
Consists of 14 & over swimmers, goals are to represent Sri Lanka at international competition, reach at least USA Jr. National standards and qualify for possible swimming scholarship at US universities, meet qualifying time standards and represent The Killer Whales with distinction at regional meets in India, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. Swimmers in this group will be challenged both mentally and physically to achieve very high standards. These swimmers will be in a comprehensive training program that includes advanced dryland and strength conditioning, power and speed work, advanced stroke mechanics. Emphasis will be given to more self reliance and to take ownership of their training and performance.
Consists of 13 & over swimmers whose commitment level has not reached the level required in the elite training group. Goals to excel at Sri Lanka National Championships, represent their school with distinction, reach at least USA Sectional time standards. Swimmers in this group will have the opportunity to represent The Killer Whales at regional meets in India, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. if they meet the qualifying times. Swimmers in this group will be encouraged to perfect stroke techniques and work on improving practice habits and improve athletic ability in and out of the water. Aerobic conditioning is emphasized to allow maximum development in later years. Each swimmer should be striving to reach the standards required to move to the Elite Group.
Consists of 13 & over swimmers who are less committed to competitive swimming but want to represent their school at competition and want to swim for fitness. The swimmers in this group will spend a lot of time on stroke technique and will strive to maintain some level of conditioning. The coaches will encourage these swimmers to stay in the sport and develop healthy and athletic lifestyles.
Consist of advanced 11-14 year old swimmers, working on advanced technique development and aerobic conditioning. Athletes in this group will be encouraged to perfect some techniques and will introduced to goal setting and a structured dryland conditioning program. These swimmers will learn the value of athletic ability in swimming. Aerobic conditioning is emphasized to a low maximum development in later years. Each swimmer should be striving to improve stroke mechanics and cultivate good practice habits that will help them immensely in the latter part of their swimming careers.
Consist of 12 & under swimmers, emphasis will be on balance and posture in the water, excellent stroke technique, coordination and athletic ability and leg conditioning and introduction to proper kicking techniques and some aerobic conditioning. Swimmers in this group will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy their swimming while developing a love for the sport. Good sportsmanship and an aptitude for competition are also learnt here.
